You have entered the website of Heavy Metal Design Ltd, a structural steel drafting company.
In January 1993 I began a five year apprenticeship with Chinook Drafting Services Ltd in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Over the course of the next five years I worked on many projects, the majority of which were commercial/institutional projects (Schools, Hospitals, RCMP detachments, etc), mainly in British Columbia, Canada. Working in British Columbia familiarized me with connections for earthquake provisions in the building code. Working both manually and with Autocad these first five years were very helpful in getting my "detailing legs" under me.
After completing my apprenticeship in February 1998 I opened Heavy Metal Design Ltd. Continuing work on Commercial projects and also expanding into Industrial (conveyors, furnace boxes, ladders/platforms, etc) as well. I completed many projects throughout British Columbia, Alberta, Michigan, California, Texas and even Trinidad, working both in Metric and Imperial.
Trying to stay abreast of all the differing technologies, in September 2010 I took an extensive course in Tekla Structures (formerly called X-Steel).
I am currently operating Tekla version 2022
Working for both local and out of country fabricators has allowed me to become fully conversant with AISC, CISC, "Allowable Stress" and "Limit States" designs.
My commitment to fast and accurate project completion meant building a core team to make it happen, which is why I am again working with my father Mike, a senior checker with fifty-three years experience.
We also have access to another senior detailer with forty-three years experience when the need arises.
